A Compton man who allegedly tried to escape from custody by shattering the window of a sheriff’s patrol car pleaded not guilty Friday to escape and other charges.
Ivan Richard Johnson, 20, is charged with one count each of escape by force or violence and vandalism with under $400 damage, two counts of assault upon a peace officer and three counts of resisting an executive officer.
Johnson allegedly used his head to shatter a window in a patrol car after refusing to board a bus to go back to jail following a Jan. 23 court hearing in Compton, where he was facing one count of resisting an executive officer.
Johnson allegedly pushed and shoved his way out of the patrol car after sheriff’s deputies pulled the vehicle over for safety reasons. He was discovered hiding under a car about five hours later, prosecutors said.
He is due back in a Compton courtroom Feb. 24, when a hearing is scheduled to determine if there is enough evidence to require him to stand trial.
