Two of the three armed robbery suspects arrested after a no-hit officer-involved shooting in Long Beach are 19-year-old local men and the third is a 20-year-old Compton resident, police said Friday.

But police withheld the suspects’ names, citing an ongoing investigation.

Officers were dispatched just before 4 p.m. Thursday to the 400 block of West Cowles Street to investigate a report of an armed robbery that had just occurred. The calling party provided a location and description of three possible suspects, police said.

When officers arrived, they saw three possible suspects matching the description given by the caller, according to police.

“Upon officers making contact with the suspects, one of the suspects brandished a handgun and an officer-involved shooting occurred,” according to a police statement. “The suspects ran from officers and two of them were taken into custody a short distance away.”

A perimeter was set up and police learned that the third suspect was hiding in a trash can. Homes in the immediate area were then evacuated and the suspect was taken into custody without further incident.

A handgun was recovered at the shooting scene.

One of the 19-year-old men and the 20-year-old were both booked on suspicion of attempted robbery, with bail set at $50,000, and the other suspect was booked on suspicion of attempted robbery and carrying a loaded firearm, with bail set at $90,000. The latter suspect also faces a possible gang-related enhancement.

No officers were injured.
