Police on Thursday were seeking the public’s help in identifying a man who robbed $2,000 from an employee at an El Monte footwear business before shaking the victim’s hand and telling him, “God bless you.”

The suspect entered Multiwear Corp. in the 2500 block of Durfee Avenue about 3:10 p.m. Saturday and asked for donations, according to El Monte police Sgt. Richard Luna.

He confronted an employee who told him he had no money, but because the suspect simulated having a gun in his waistband, the victim took $2,000 from his wallet and handed it over, Luna said.

The suspect then demanded the victim’s cellphone, but the victim pleaded to keep it and the suspect acquiesced, according to the sergeant.

“Prior to leaving the location, the suspect shook the victim’s hand and told him, “God bless you,” Luna said.

The suspect is described as Latino, about 30 years old, 5 feet 6 inches tall, 150 pounds with black hair and brown eyes.

Anyone with information about the case was urged to call the El Monte police watch commander at (626) 580-2109.
