An 18-year-old man accused of shooting a woman in the face in a case of mistaken identity pleaded not guilty Monday to murder and assault with a deadly weapon charges.

Jose Alberto Perez faces up to 25 years to life in prison if convicted.

Prosecutors allege Perez brought a shotgun to his stepfather’s house in South Los Angeles on March 18 and shot 35-year-old Yesenia DeLeon once in the face.

Perez allegedly mistook DeLeon, his stepfather’s girlfriend, for someone who had been in a fight with Perez’s mother.

Perez is due back in court May 14, when a date is expected to be set for a preliminary hearing to determine whether there is sufficient evidence to proceed to trial.
