An allegedly drunken man who climbed on top of a Metro commuter bus and talked about killing himself eventually surrounded after a long standoff and is undergoing a psychiatric evaluation, police said Sunday.
At about 2:30 a.m., the unidentified man climbed onto the roof of a bus at 8th and Olive streets in downtown and drew attention from police and fire authorities, Lt. Lester Trull of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said.
Prior to the incident, the man was reportedly drinking at a party with relatives and got involved in an altercation there, according to ABC7. He talked about committing suicide while atop the bus, the station reported.
A crisis negotiation team managed to talk the man down about three hours after the standoff began.
Trull said the man was not arrested, but was scheduled to undergo psychiatric evaluation.
