Authorities Wednesday identified a man who was shot and killed by sheriff’s deputies after he allegedly injured a man and his wife with a meat cleaver.

The violence occurred about 12:35 p.m. Tuesday in the 10400 block of Enloe Street, according to the sheriff’s department.

The suspect was identified as Thong Ma, 32, of El Monte, and the victim was identified as Chau Ngo, 59, also of El Monte, said coroner’s Assistant Chief Ed Winter.

Sheriff’s officials said deputies initially responded to a report of an assault with a deadly weapon. The suspect had attacked a man and woman — a husband and wife. The man died at the scene, and the woman was taken to a hospital, according to sheriff’s officials.

When the first deputy arrived, he found a woman in the street who was bleeding from the head, Deputy Juanita Navarro-Suarez said.

The deputy then saw the suspect, standing in a flower bed outside the front door of a home, who “appeared to be hacking repeatedly at something,” Navarro-Suarez said.

“In order to gain a better and unobstructed view of what the suspect was doing, the deputy moved closer on to the property and realized the suspect was hacking a male with a meat cleaver,” Navarro-Suarez said.

The suspect allegedly refused orders by deputies to drop the weapon, then when a second deputy showed up, the suspect again charged both deputies with the meat cleaver in hand, Navarro-Suarez said.

No deputies were injured.
