A 20-year-old Garden Grove man was behind bars Monday, accused of fatally stabbing a man who was apparently a total stranger.

Troy David Son is charged with murder, with a sentencing enhancement for the use of a deadly weapon. He is scheduled to be arraigned June 19.

Son is accused of fatally stabbing 19-year-old Bryan Ortega of Garden Grove on May 19, Garden Grove police Lt. Bob Bogue said.

Police were summoned to Avalon Avenue and Fairview Street about 9 p.m. that day for a reported stabbing, Bogue said. Ortega was taken to UC Irvine Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 9:43 p.m., Bogue said.

Forensic evidence led investigators to Son, who was arrested May 22, but police have declined to be more specific about why they believe he killed Ortega. Police were working to establish what happened between the suspect and victim, who did not know each other, Bogue said.

“It seems like a total stranger attack,” Bogue said.

The suspect has “no direct connection to a gang,” Bogue said.

Son listed his job as a waiter in jail records. He was being held in lieu of $1 million bail.

Son has a prior conviction for misdemeanor vehicle theft. He pleaded guilty March 6 and was sentenced to four days in jail.
