A 26-year-old man who allegedly tried to strangle his girlfriend with an electrical cord in her Pomona apartment was charged Tuesday with attempted murder and two other felony counts.

Francisco Javier Munozcapetillo of Ontario was ordered to remain jailed on $1 million bail while awaiting arraignment July 2 on one count each of attempted murder, willfully injuring a girlfriend and assault by means likely to produce great bodily injury.

The criminal complaint also alleges that Munozcapetillo personally inflicted great bodily injury on the victim, whose name was withheld.

Following an overnight visit, the woman woke up to find her boyfriend striking her stomach and trying to strangle her with an electrical cord until she lost consciousness, the prosecution alleges.

She was taken to a hospital for treatment after police were called to the scene at about 6:50 a.m. Saturday. Munozcapetillo was arrested later that evening.

If convicted as charged, he could face a potential life prison term plus five years, according to the District Attorney’s Office.
