Emergency crews have been busy Monday – this first full day of summer – battling brush fires near Malibu, West Covina and Santa Clarita.

The Malibu blaze was sparked by a vehicle crash that killed the driver.  Firefighters worked this afternoon to recover the body, and to ensure the two-acre brush fire was fully extinguished. A firefighter suffered a minor injury at the scene.

Elsewhere a county firefighter and an inmate assigned to a camp crew were hurt battling a brush fire that scorched 10 acres near West Covina. Crews got the upper hand on the flames within about 50 minutes, but remained on scene to douse hot spots. The condition of the injured firefighter was not immediately known.

And the brush fire in Santa Clarita stemmed from a blaze that destroyed a home near Bouquet Canyon Road and Shadow Lane. Firefighters remained on scene to prevent the brush fire from spreading. At 2:30 p.m. the fire was reported to be 90 percent contained.

High temperatures around the Southland hovered in the 90s in some valley areas, low 80s in downtown Los Angeles and the 70s at the beaches. Continued warm temperatures and some wind through the week will continue to make officials wary of fire danger.
