Los Angeles police were on a tactical alert Sunday after a spate of gang-related shootings in South Los Angeles.
The alert covered an area spanning Vernon Avenue to Manchester Boulevard and Crenshaw Boulevard to Figueroa and San Pedro streets.
Under the alert, issued Saturday night, officers with the LAPD’s 77th Division focused on investigating five shooting that occurred within a roughly 24-hour period while officers from other divisions stepped in to handle other calls.
According to reports from investigators with the 77th Division, the shootings on Saturday included:
- A man in his late teens or early 20s who was shot in the head and killed just after 4 p.m. at the intersection of Hoover and 81st streets
- A man who was shot in Hyde Park at the intersection of Hyde Park Boulevard and Brynhurst Avenue at 9:05 p.m.
- Three people who were shot and wounded at Vermont Square park, Budlong Avenue and 47th Street in the Vermont Square neighborhood, at 9:40 p.m.
A tactical alert is issued when this is a major incident that may require police to work on different shifts or in different areas.
