A man who apparently tried to commit suicide was seriously injured Wednesday after he jumped from a bridge onto the San Bernardino (10) Freeway in West Covina, a California Highway Patrol officer said.

The suicide attempt took place about 6:05 a.m. on the eastbound 10 Freeway between the Barranca and Citrus avenues exits and temporarily shut down all eastbound traffic, said CHP Officer Jennifer Cassidy.

The unidentified man climbed over the safety cage on the Barranca Bridge and jumped onto the freeway, she said. The man survived the jump and was transported to LAC+USC Medical Center

The incident prompted the CHP to stop traffic at the Citrus Avenue exit and shut down the Number 1, 2, and 3 lanes for almost 40 minutes. The freeway was cleared and the CHP’s SigAlert was cancelled at 6:47 a.m., Cassidy said.

There’s no word yet on why the man jumped, she said.
