A gunshot victim who crashed an SUV into two other vehicles and a home in South Los Angeles Thursday afternoon was pulled out of the burning vehicle by two police officers, but died at a hospital.
The crash was reported at 2:53 p.m. in the 100 block of 50th Street, just west of San Pedro Street in the South Park neighborhood.
The two Los Angeles police officers were first on scene and pulled the wounded man from the burning SUV, suffering minor smoke inhalation in the process, said Erik Scott of the Los Angeles Fire Department.
The unidentified man and both officers were taken to a hospital, where the driver, who was in his 30s, was later pronounced dead, according to Los Angeles police Officer Jack Richter.
No other injuries were reported.
It was not immediately clear what led up to the man’s shooting or where it occurred.
At least one of the vehicles struck by the SUV also caught fire, according to Scott, who said 32 firefighters put out the flames in 20 minutes and also contained fuel leaking from the SUV, the front of which punched its way into the home.
The city Department of Building & Safety was notified to check the home’s structural integrity, he said.
