A 43-year-old woman was being held in lieu of $1 million bail for allegedly stabbing her 61-year-old mother to death Monday at a convalescent hospital in Covina.

Officers sent on a call of a female not breathing in the 800 block of West San Bernardino Road at 5:11 a.m. found Margaret Machiko Yamaguchi lying on the floor of her room suffering from several stab wounds, said Covina Police Sgt. Gregg Peterson.

Paramedics pronounced Yamaguchi dead at the scene. The victim’s daughter, Athina Sumi Rivera, who was spending the night in her mother’s room, has been identified as a suspect in the killing, Peterson said.

Rivera was taken into custody and was being housed at the Covina Police Department on suspicion of murder. Her bail has been set at $1,015,724 and she is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday at Citrus Superior Court in West Covina.
