Firefighters were on standby at Runway 25 Right as a precaution, the Los Angeles Fire Department reported.
A cockpit indicator light alerted the pilot to a potential mechanical issue aboard the Boeing 767-300, which had 137 passengers and a crew of 10 aboard, said Martha Thomas of American Airlines.
The passengers were transferred to another plane that was due to land in Honolulu about 6:40 p.m., Thomas said.
The precise nature of the potential mechanical issue was not disclosed.
