A 25-year-old man pleaded no contest Tuesday to a hit- and-run charge stemming from the death of his girlfriend’s 67-year-old mother in Hawthorne.
Amir Ali Rasheed Bass is facing up to four years in state prison, according to Ricardo Santiago of the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.
The charge stemmed from the death of Martina Olivacce, who tried to intervene in an argument between her daughter and Bass as he sat inside his vehicle on Doty Avenue on Feb. 26.
Bass backed up his car, hitting Olivacce and pinning her under a tire before fleeing the scene, according to prosecutors. He was arrested that day by Hawthorne police and has remained behind bars since then.
Two other counts that were filed earlier this year against Bass — gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and driving under the influence of an alcoholic beverage causing injury — are expected to be dismissed when he is sentenced Nov. 5.
