The FBI Saturday said a 62-year-old man wanted in connection with a 1990 murder and attempted murder in Los Angeles has been extradited from Guatemala.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department conducted an investigation into the murder of a person associated with Santos Lopez Corado and the attempted murder of Corado’s wife in 1990 and identified Corado as the person responsible. The department also determined that he had fled to Central America, according to a statement from the FBI.

On Feb. 17, 2012, sheriff’s detectives obtained a no-bail arrest warrant for Corado after he was charged by the District Attorney’s Office with murder and attempted murder. When detectives received a tip that Corado, a former resident of Los Angeles and native of Guatemala, had fled the country, the FBI’s Fugitive Task Force in Los Angeles was asked to assist in locating and returning him to the United States.

Corado’s specific location in Guatemala was unknown until sheriff’s detectives received a tip indicating that he was driving a mini-bus in Jutiapa, Guatemala, the FBI said. When he was located, the United States requested Corado’s provisional arrest and extradition.

He was provisionally arrested in Guatemala by the FBI’s Transnational Anti-Gang Task Force in January 2013 without incident. He was subsequently transferred to Guatemala City and held by authorities there during extradition proceedings until Friday, when officials in Guatemala surrendered Corado for extradition.

Corado was turned over to sheriff’s detectives Friday evening after landing at Los Angeles International Airport.
