A 34-woman was killed and a man was injured Thursday when they were struck by a Metrolink train in Santa Fe Springs

The pair were struck around 8:45 a.m. Thursday near Lakeland Road and Bloomfield Avenue, Lt. Mike Roy of the Whittier Police Department told City News Service. The Whittier Police Department also serves Santa Fe Springs.

Officers responding to the scene found the woman on the tracks, where she was pronounced dead, Whittier police spokeswoman Emily Armstrong told KTLA5.

She was later identified by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner as Graciela Vargas.

A man who was also at the scene suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to a hospital, according to Armstrong.

Armstrong told the station the railroad crossing gate arms were down when the two attempted to cross the tracks.

Lakeland Road was closed between Bloomfield and Shoemaker avenues while investigators worked at the scene, according to KTLA.
