Police are investigating the possibility that two motorists involved in a multi-vehicle crash in San Pedro Saturday that killed a man and critically injured two other people may have been under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
The crash occurred at 2:34 a.m. in the 1500 block of South Gaffey Street, Los Angeles Police Sgt. Dana Adams said.
A Toyota Scion going southbound on Gaffey Street tried to make an eastbound turn on to 16th Street when his car was struck on the passenger side by a northbound BMW, said Sgt. P. Ybarra of the LAPD’s South Traffic Division.
The BMW then sideswiped two other vehicles.
The occupant on the passenger side of the Toyota, who was described as a man in his 40s, was killed instantly, said Ybarra.
Paramedics rushed the driver of the Toyota to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center with critical injuries, he said.
The driver of the BMW was transported to San Pedro Peninsula Hospital, said the police sergeant, adding that he did not immediately know the condition of the motorist.
An occupant in the BMW was also transported to San Pedro Peninsula Hospital, Ybarra said. His condition was not immediately known.
Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Erik Scott said one of the critically injured was a man and the other was a woman. Two men and a woman suffered less serious injuries and were also hospitalized.
