Covina teen stabbed to death; 2 young men still at large in attack

A young man was fatally stabbed early Friday by one of two men who confronted him and a friend in an unincorporated area bordering Covina.

The attack occurred in the 17000 block of East Bellbrook Street around 1:15 a.m. Gabriel Leyva, 19, of Covina died at the scene, said coroner’s Assistant Chief Ed Winter.

Leyva was walking with a friend to a store when they were approached by two young men estimated to between 18 and 20 years old and an argument began, said Lt. John Corina of the sheriff’s Homicide Bureau.

One of the attackers stabbed Leyva several times, then both ran away east on Bellbrook Street and out of view, Corina said.

The knife used in the attack was not recovered at the scene, he said.
