An elderly man and woman were killed in a fiery wreck on the old Sierra Highway when their vehicle drifted off the road, CHP officers said Thursday.

They were heading south on Sierra Highway, north of Vasquez Rocks, at around 7:20 a.m. Their Honda swerved onto the dirt shoulder for unknown reasons, said a CHP officer named Turnn in a crash report.

The vehicle struck a concrete drainage culvert, overturned and burst into flames, which engulfed it, Turnn said.

It’s unknown how fast the car had been going, he said.

The 84-year-old man driving it, and the 82-year-old woman passenger, died at the scene, according to the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office.

They were both residents of Saugus, but their names were not released as coroners notify family members.
