Martin Serna is the new chief of the Torrance Fire Department, where he has worked since 1993, it was announced Thursday.

Serna started as an entry-level firefighter and rose through the ranks, working as fire engineer, captain, battalion chief and assistant fire chief prior to his appointment to the department’s top post, according to Torrance City Manager LeRoy Jackson.

Serna is the ninth person to hold the position and replaces William Racowschi, who in August announced he would retire at the end of 2015 after seven years heading up the department and 35 years with the city.
