A suspected burglar who was allegedly trying to steal a motorcycle from a Redondo Beach home was shot in a leg by the homeowner Wednesday.

Police received a 911 call about 3 a.m. about the shooting that occurred in the 2000 block of Nelson Avenue.

The homeowner was alerted to someone inside his garage and armed himself with a handgun. When he went to the garage, he confronted Laurencio Gamboa Jr., 33, as he was taking a motorcycle, according to Sgt. Shawn Freeman of the Redondo Beach Police Department.

The homeowner wound up shooting Gamboa, who tried to flee but was detained by the resident until police arrived, Freeman said.

Gamboa was treated for a leg wound and arrested on suspicion of burglary and theft. He is being held in lieu of $50,000 bail.
