An investigation is underway this weekend into a single-car crash in Long Beach in which a man was found dead.

The driver of the 1994 Mercedes-Benz may have suffered a medical emergency prior to the crash, which was reported just before 4 a.m. Friday at the intersection of Seventh Street and Pepper Tree Lane, according to the Long Beach Police Department.

Investigators say the car was eastbound on Seventh Street when witnesses saw it stop for no apparent reason in the middle of the intersection of Seventh and Pacific Coast Highway, police said.

“Moments later, witnesses observed the vehicle continue eastbound on Seventh Street, traveling at approximately 25 mph, when the vehicle veered into the signal light pole” on the southeast corner of the intersection, a police statement said.

The name of the driver, pronounced dead at the scene, was withheld pending positive identification and notification of kin by the county coroner’s office.
