[16:9 Featured] Los Angeles School Police Car

Authorities Monday identified a 19-year-old who was fatally shot in Boyle Heights, but withheld releasing the name of his pregnant passenger, who suffered fatal injuries when the car crashed into the front of a home.

The possibly gang-related shooting and crash occurred about 11 a.m. Sunday at the intersection of Pleasant Avenue and Eschandia Street, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

Henry Sanchez, of El Monte, died at a hospital, said Assistant Chief Coroner Ed Winter.

The woman was trapped in the wreckage and died before she could be freed, according to police.

A member of Sanchez’s family told ABC7 the woman was 18-year-old Marie Cordova.

Police told ABC7 they had been following the car Sanchez was driving, which may have been stolen.

Sanchez got back into the car, then drove into the home at 1550 Pleasant Ave., police said.

Another passenger in the car, a man, was taken to a hospital but was not seriously injured, authorities said.

“I guess Maria died and my brother was rushed to the hospital and the other guy crawled out the car and that’s basically all we know,” Sanchez’s brother Jesse Sanchez told ABC7.

No one in the home was hurt although one person was inside when the crash occurred.

Sanchez’s father Jesus told ABC7 he wasn’t aware of his son having a gang affiliation.

Jesse Sanchez told ABC7 his slain brother “was excited… that he was about to be a father.”

The suspect was described as Hispanic, about 5 feet 9 inches tall, with a thin build.

Anyone with information that could help identify him was urged to call (877) LAPD-24-7. Anonymous tips can be provided through Crime Stoppers by calling (800) 222-TIPS.
