An ultralight plane went down in a fiery crash soon after takeoff from the Hawthorne Municipal Airport Monday, and the female pilot was rushed to an area hospital in full cardiac arrest.

County firefighters dispatched at 12:02 p.m. to the 3600 block of West 120th Street put out the flames and extricated the unidentified woman from the wreckage, said county fire Capt. Keith Mora.

The aircraft was described as an Airborne XT-912, which is a light- sport, weight-shift-control plane, according to Ian Gregor of the Federal Aviation Administration.

The crash occurred about a quarter-mile off the west end of the airport. The pilot was the only occupant aboard the aircraft.

The 3600 block of West 120th Street was expected to be closed for at least several hours to allow investigators to access the crash scene.
