A brush fire in heavy vegetation near Hansen Dam sent a large plume of smoke over the eastern San Fernando Valley, but the blaze was extinguished in just over one hour.

The fire was reported at 11451 Foothill Blvd. at 5:45 p.m., Monday and more than 60 Los Angeles city firefighters were called in to fight it. Los Angeles County also sent inmate crews to assist digging fire lines through the dense foliage.

Just before 8 p.m., firefighters declared the blaze extinguished. Crews were to remain at the blackened lake bottom to watch for flareups for at least 90 minutes, Erik Scott of the Los Angeles Fire Department said.
