A major emergency fire at a Sun Valley junkyard sent a towering plume of black smoke over the San Fernando Valley Sunday, but no injuries were reported and no structures were threatened.
More than 150 firefighters responded and poured water on the fire, which was reported about 3:50 p.m. in the 9100 block of North Tujunga Avenue, according to Erik Scott of the Los Angeles Fire Department.
Firefighters were in a defensive mode, fighting the flames from the perimeter with large hose streams, as “large piles of tightly stacked vehicles” became engulfed in fire, Scott said.
The fire was knocked down after a two-hour and 16-minute battle and crews were expected to remain at the scene throughout the night in case of flare-ups, Scott said.
