Nearly 90 firefighters battled a fire Monday at a one- story home in Echo Park where two cats perished, authorities said.

No human injuries were reported as a result of the blaze, which was reported about 3:25 p.m. in the 600 block of Echo Park Avenue, according to Brian Humphrey of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

Eighty-six firefighters responded and kept the flames from spreading to nearby homes. A knockdown was declared at 3:50 p.m., Humphrey said.

There was no immediate word on the cause of the blaze.
