A 10-month-old child being pushed in a stroller Thursday was struck and fatally injured by a pickup truck in South Los Angeles, police reported.

Los Angeles police say 36-year-old Juana Oxlaj was attempting to cross Broadway westbound at the north crosswalk at 59th Place with her child when the accident occurred about 7:10 a.m.

Midway in the crosswalk, the two were struck by a truck whose driver was making a left turn from 59th Place to northbound Broadway, according to a police statement.

Oxlaj and the child were taken to California Hospital Medical Center, where the infant was pronounced dead a short time later.

Oxlaj suffered head trauma, but is expected to survive, according to the LAPD. She was listed in stable condition.

The driver of the 2002 Chevrolet Silverado, 38-year-old Esteban Carbajal of Los Angeles, stopped at the scene and neither alcohol nor drugs were suspected as factors in the crash, police said.

The fatality is under investigation by detectives at the LAPD’s Central Traffic Division. Anyone with information about the crash was urged to call them at (213) 833-3713 or Officer Poss at (213) 486-0760. The Central Traffic Division watch commander can be reached at (213) 486-3713.
