A driver was arrested Thursday morning after he allegedly opened fire on another motorist on the Harbor (110) Freeway near Torrance.
The victim was not injured. He called the sheriff’s Carson Station at 10:55 a.m. to report that he was fired upon while driving north on the freeway in an unincorporated area south of 223rd Street. The victim told deputies that the shooting happened after the suspect pulled alongside his vehicle and the two drivers exchanged words, officials said.
The suspect — later identified as 25-year-old Mike Ruiz of Los Angeles – – allegedly fired at the victim, “with at least one round penetrating the passenger compartment of his vehicle,” according to the sheriff’s department.
“He was able to provide a description of the suspect, his vehicle and the gun that was used in the crime. He also told dispatch that he saw the suspect exit the 110 Freeway at Carson Street,” according to the sheriff’s department.
Deputies checking the area a short time later spotted Ruiz driving near West 220th Street and Randall Avenue in Carson.
“The gunman was taken into custody without incident. A firearm and ammunition were recovered from his vehicle,” according to the sheriff’s department.
Ruiz was booked on suspicion of attempted murder and was being held in lieu of $1,105,000 bail.
