A march will be held Saturday night to remember a mother and daughter shot to death one week ago in Long Beach in a crime that has not been solved.
The Long Beach Love Your Community Walk will take place from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Locust Avenue, moving south from 12th Street to Ninth Street. The march is being organized by the Epic Strong gym, according to a message on the group’s Facebook page.
Marchers will wear white shirts and burn white candles in a show of unity.
Carina Mancera, 26, and her 4-year-old daughter, Jennabel Anaya, were killed around 10:30 p.m. last Saturday at East Ninth Street and Locust Avenue.
Police said the victims and the child’s father, Luis Anaya, were walking to their nearby residence when gunfire rang out.
Luis Anaya told investigators that a man walked up to his longtime girlfriend and their daughter and suddenly — and without provocation — opened fire, then ran off.
Authorities said they are struggling to figure out who carried out the killings.
A $40,000 reward was announced Friday for information that helps police track down the gunman.
“Please don’t let this crime go any longer without somebody coming forward and saying, ‘You know what I’m not going to tolerate this level of violence anywhere, let alone the city of Long Beach,”‘ Police Chief Robert Luna said. “We are absolutely sickened by it.”
“It greatly concerns me as mayor,” Mayor Robert Garcia said. “It concerns our police department and brings us a lot of sadness and anger at the same time.”
The city of Long Beach and county Board of Supervisors each contributed to $20,000 to the reward fund.
A GoFundMe page was set up to help the family cover funeral expenses.
“Our family is heartbroken with this tragic event, and we hope that you can help us give these two beautiful souls a graceful resting place,” the family’s message reads.
Long Beach Police detectives asked anyone with information on the shooting to call them at (562) 570-7244.
