A motorist was killed Tuesday and three others were injured, two critically, in a hit-and-run crash involving seven vehicles on the southbound San Gabriel River (605) Freeway in Santa Fe Springs.

The crash was reported at 3:44 a.m. near the Telegraph Road exit north of the Santa Ana (5) Freeway, said California Highway Patrol Officer Francisco Villalobos.

Victor Macedo, 55, of Santa Fe Springs died at the scene, the CHP reported. Two other motorists were hospitalized in critical condition, and a third suffered minor injuries, the CHP reported.

According to the CHP’s preliminary investigation, Macedo was driving a 1987 Nissan Stanza when he was rear-ended by a vehicle that kept going. Authorities did not release a description of the hit-and-run driver or vehicle.

After being rear-ended, the Nissan spun out and was struck by another car, and the subsequent chain-reaction crash involved four other vehicles, one of which caught fire, the CHP reported.

The southbound lanes of the freeway were closed for the investigation. All but the slow lane were reopened about 8:45 a.m., and that lane was reopened about a half-hour afterward.

Anyone with information on the crash was urged to call the CHP Santa Fe Springs Area office at (562) 868-0503.
