LAPD Chief Charlie Beck was injured Saturday while riding his off-road motorcycle in the Tehachapi Mountains with a group of friends, police said Sunday.
Beck fell on a rocky trail and broke his pelvis, but was able to ride his cycle back to his truck, and drive home. He then went to an emergency room at an undisclosed hospital, according to a statement from the department’s Media Relations Section.
He has been a competitive off-road motorcycle rider for the past 40 years and is a current and past National Police and Fire Champion, according to the statement.
“I want to thank everyone for their well-wishes as I recuperate from my recent motorcycle mishap,” he said. “As always, I am in constant contact with my LAPD command staff and will be working diligently while I recuperate to continue leading the men and women of the LAPD.”
Doctors said Beck is expected to have a full, speedy recovery and return to the office within the next week, police said.
