After being trapped behind security bars, a 72-year-old man was rescued from a fire in a messy house in Mount Washington that had no working smoke alarms, authorities said Friday.
The blaze was reported about 10:15 p.m. Thursday at 4918 E. Mendota Ave., said Erik Scott of the Los Angeles Fire Department.
The man was on the first story of a split-level home, Scott said. He was found by firefighters behind a window with security bars that he could not open himself and firefighters quickly cut them and pulled him outside the burning home to safety.
Firefighters were able to “quickly locate a man trapped inside and successfully rescue him,” Scott said.
The man was assessed by firefighters and taken to a hospital in good condition, according to Scott.
It took 35 firefighters 25 minutes to knock the blaze down, Scott said.
The cause was under investigation and the loss was being tabulated.
