A Riverside County man was charged Friday with killing a Long Beach woman as she was holding her toddler and shooting the woman’s husband in the head.

John Kevin McVoy Jr., 35, of Corona, was ordered to be held in lieu of $5.025 million bail while awaiting arraignment Jan. 30 in a Long Beach courtroom on a count of murder and two counts of attempted murder.

McVoy allegedly shot Susan Garcia and her husband Tuesday evening after going to their home in the 6300 block of Knight Avenue and getting into an argument with the couple.

Susan Garcia, 33, was shot in the upper body as she was holding her toddler and was pronounced dead at the scene, and her husband was shot in the head, prosecutors said.

The toddler — who is named along with Garcia’s husband as victims in the attempted murder counts — was not struck by gunfire, but fell to the ground with her mother, according to Sarah Ardalani of the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.

Other people in the house disarmed and subdued McVoy immediately after the shooting, according to authorities.

If convicted as charged, he could face a potential life prison sentence, according to the District Attorney’s Office.
