A woman was critically injured when she was run over by her own car, which had her two children inside it, police reported Saturday.

The children, ages 13 and 2, suffered minor injuries when the car ran over their mother, in her 40s, and subsequently crashed into a pole near South Park, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. The incident occurred around 6:20 p.m. on 50th Street just east of Avalon Boulevard.

Witnesses said the woman stopped and exited her 2004 Chrysler Sebring for an unknown reason; then, the car began traveling in reverse.

She tried to re-enter the car but became trapped and was dragged about 200 feet as the vehicle went westbound through the intersection, police said. It was believed that she fell to the pavement from the driver’s side of the car when the left front tire ran over her.

The car continued out of control and then struck a wooden utility pole, coming to a rest a short distance away, police said.

The children were able to safely get out of the vehicle, but the woman suffered severe head trauma and was taken to California Hospital Medical Center by paramedics from the Los Angeles Fire Department. Police said she remains in critical condition.

Her children were taken to UCLA Harbor Medical Center and were treated and released with minor injuries, police added.

The cause of collision was under investigation by LAPD Central Traffic detectives.
