An immigrant clerk at a Chevron gas station in the Los Feliz area was killed Tuesday while apparently trying to comply with the demands of a gunman who robbed the business, police said.

The employee, who was about 25 and came to this country for a better life and to study, managed to call 911 after the shooting, which occurred about 3:30 a.m. in the 2100 block of North Vermont Avenue.

The clerk, who died at a hospital, had come to the United States from Bangladesh to study, his manager told reporters. His name was withheld pending family notification.

The suspect, described only as a man in his early 20s, fled in a light- colored vehicle, the Los Angeles Police Department reported.

The suspect made a purchase and stayed in the business while another customer entered, bought something and left, according to LAPD Detective Meghan Aguilar.

“The original … suspect approached the cashier again,” she said. “He appeared to be making another transaction, although before that began, he pulled out a handgun and gave some orders to the cashier. The cashier appeared to be cooperating, although at that time the suspect fired multiple shots at the cashier.”

The suspect then took the cash drawer and fled, Aguilar said.

Anyone with information on the case was urged to call (877) LAPD-247.
