A pedestrian was fatally struck by a vehicle on a Panorama City freeway, authorities said Saturday.

The crash was reported at 11:25 p.m. Friday on the southbound San Diego (405) Freeway, south of Roscoe Boulevard, the California Highway Patrol said.

The male pedestrian, whose age was not known, was struck by a 2016 Ford driven by a 27-year-old Modesto man while he was walking in traffic lanes, the CHP said. The reason he was walking on the freeway was not known, said a CHP officer at the scene. The pedestrian died at the scene.

The vehicle sustained minor damage but none of the occupants were hurt, the CHP reported. Driver Silvestre Navarette remained at the scene and no arrests were made but the crash remains under investigation, the CHP said. He was in the vehicle with wife Vanessa Navarette, 24, an 8-year-old boy and a 5- year-old girl.

A SigAlert was issued for the closure of the carpool and No. 1 and 2 lanes for the investigation, and all lanes were re-opened by 3 a.m.

The identity of the pedestrian is not known and anyone with information regarding the crash was asked to call Officer Leland Tang at the West Valley CHP Area Office at (818) 888-0980.
