Authorities Sunday hunted the kidnapping suspect who stole a car in Cathedral City with two toddlers inside.
It wasn’t known if the car thief knew the kids were in the car, but the apparent kidnapping prompted the issuance of an Amber Alert until authorities found the kids safe in the car in Desert Hot Springs about eight hours later.
Police have not identified any suspects in the car theft, but the suspect would “most definitely” face child abduction charges, even if he or she only meant to take the car, Cathedral City police Sgt. R. Sanchez told City News Service.
“(The suspect or suspects) drove around for some time” before parking the car at the church, Sanchez said, indicating the tots were not immediately abandoned.
Someone stole the white 2016 four-door Honda Accord about 6:45 p.m. Thursday from the 31500 block of Whispering Palms Trail, according to the Cathedral City Police Department. The car was last seen traveling toward Ramon Road.
At 2:30 a.m. Friday, Riverside County Sheriff’s Department deputies found the Honda with its engine on, parked next to a church in the 17400 block of Bubbling Wells Road in Desert Hot Springs.
They were reunited with their family after a medical examination, police said.
Police said the boys’ babysitter stepped out of the car for a while and when she came back, the car was gone.
Anyone with information regarding the crime was urged to contact Detective Alirio Moulin at (760) 770-0381 or Sgt. Alberto Ruiz at (760) 770- 0320.
