A man was arrested on suspicion of DUI after driving a borrowed U-Haul truck at high speeds in a reckless chase with deputies through Palmdale, authorities  reported Monday.

The chase ended only after two tires in the U-Haul vehicle were flattened by a spike strip.

The whole thing began when deputies initiated a pursuit of the vehicle at 10:05 p.m. Sunday at Avenue R-8 and 40th Street East. The truck was observed speeding on the wrong side of the road and blowing through red lights, said Lt. Ron Shaffer of the Palmdale Sheriff’s Station.

Deputies broke off the pursuit after about a mile for safety reasons because the driver was being erratic in his effort to evade them, Shaffer said. A sheriff’s helicopter tracked the U-Haul until it was driven over a spike strip at 25th Street East and Avenue Q and the suspect got out and gave up.

He was arrested on suspicion of DUI and was being booked at the Palmdale Sheriff’s Station, the lieutenant said.

It appeared a friend of the suspect’s had rented the U-Haul truck and allowed the suspect to drive it, Shaffer said.
