Deputies investigating a report of a vehicle burglary early Wednesday in the Firestone Park area fatally shot a man who allegedly pulled out a handgun and pointed it at them, the sheriff’s department reported.
The shooting was reported at 1:15 a.m. near 91st and Alameda streets, said Deputy Trina Schrader of the Sheriff’s Information Bureau.
The name of the man, who died at the scene, was withheld pending notification of his relatives. No deputies were injured.
When Century Station deputies arrived in the area to check out the car burglary report, “they saw the white Honda Accord described in the call parked, with the trunk partially opened,” Deputy Guillermina Saldana said.
“As they inspected the car for occupants, they noticed a dark vehicle parked in the alley just south of their location with the brake lights on,” Saldana said, and theorized that the vehicle may have been involved in the burglary.
“As they approached the driver … they smelled what they believed to be marijuana coming from inside the vehicle and asked the driver to exit the car,” Saldana said. “The suspect refused, and as one of the deputies held his arm to escort him out, he pulled away, reached for a handgun and pointed it at the deputies. A deputy-involved shooting occurred and the suspect was fatally shot in the torso.”
The man’s handgun was recovered at the scene, Saldana said. It was unknown if he was involved in the vehicle burglary, she said.
