A pedestrian ignoring a red light was run down and killed in a crosswalk, police said Sunday.
One vehicle “stopped abruptly” to avoid hitting the pedestrian, but a second vehicle that was driven by a 71-year-old motorist was unable to come to a halt before hitting the man.
There was no word from authorities about why the dead pedestrian failed to wait for the light to turn green.
The death was at 8:38 p.m. Saturday at the intersection of La Sierra and Minnier avenues in Riverside.
Riverside city police said the two southbound vehicles were approaching a green light at the intersection when one vehicle “stopped abruptly” to avoid hitting the pedestrian.
The other vehicle — driven by the 71-year-old Riverside resident — struck the man, who had been “crossing against a red signal within the marked crosswalk,” according to police.
The driver stopped at the scene and called authorities. There was no indication of any charges being brought against the driver.
The victim was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics, police said. No name was immediately released.
