The Coroner’s Office has identified a 42-year-old man who was fatally shot while his brother was wounded in an apparent gang- related attack.

The victim was identified as Dontranail Hughes, according to Lt. David Smith of the coroner’s office.

The shooting occurred at 6:50 p.m. on April 30 near the intersection of 97th Street and Stanford Avenue when two assailants drove up to the pair, got out of their vehicle and fired, said Sgt. James Linder of the Los Angeles Police Department’s Southeast Station.

Hughes and his 25-year-old brother were both hospitalized in critical condition. Hughes was pronounced dead about four hours later and his younger brother survived the shooting, said LAPD Sgt. Greg Halka.

“We’re still trying to piece it together, but common sense tells you it was a gang shooting,” Linder said.

Detectives from the LAPD’s Southeast Station asked anyone with information regarding the shooting to call them at (213) 972-7828.
