An arson investigation was underway Wednesday after a woman’s body was found in her West Covina townhouse where crews had put out a fire.

The blaze was reported just after 7 a.m. Tuesday in the 1300 block of East Parkside Drive, according to West Covina police Officer Rudy Lopez.

Grace Wu, 62, died in her residence, said coroner’s Assistant Chief Ed Winter.

Residents of adjacent homes were evacuated and firefighters had the blaze out by about 7:25 a.m. The body was found during a subsequent check inside the residence where the fire started, Lopez said.

West Covina Fire Department Chief Larry Whithorn told the San Gabriel Valley Tribune that the fire did about $100,000 in damage to the townhouse. Two neighboring units had minor damage, an assistant fire chief told the newspaper.

The cause of the fire and the cause of the woman’s death are under investigation.
