A driver swerving from the center lane to an exit crashed into a motorcycle, and its rider was killed, the California Highway Patrol said Sunday.

The crash was at a little after 11 p.m. Saturday on the northbound Santa Ana (5) Freeway approaching the Slauson Avenue exit in Bell Gardens.

A woman driving a 2017 Hyundai sedan suddenly changed lanes from the number two lane to the Slauson Avenue offramp in an attempt to exit the freeway and subsequently struck the motorcyclist.

The impact caused the rider to be thrown from his bike. Paramedics rushed him to an area hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

He was identified at first only as the driver of a 2015 Harley-Davidson motorcycle.

The driver and her passenger inside the Hyundai were not injured. The motorist was not arrested, and it was not disclosed if she was cited.

The CHP’s East Los Angeles office asked anyone who saw the crash to call them at (323) 980-4600.
