A toy gun was recovered at the scene of an officer- involved shooting in Wilmington that left a man dead, pinned beneath a police patrol car, authorities said Wednesday.
Officers responded about 9 p.m. Tuesday to a report of a man with a gun in the 1100 block of North Wilmington Boulevard, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
“When the officers arrived in the area, they observed a lone male Hispanic in his mid-20s,” according to an LAPD statement. “Believing this may be the suspect from the radio call, they directed their attention toward him; at that time, there was an officer-involved shooting. Several shots were fired and the suspect was struck and fell to the ground. The police officer’s vehicle traveled forward, striking the male and pinning him underneath it.”
Paramedics pronounced the man dead at the scene.
An officer who suffered minor injuries, possibly while exiting the patrol vehicle, was taken to a hospital and later released, according to the LAPD.
“During the preliminary investigation, detectives interviewed witnesses who told detectives in the minutes leading up to the officer-involved shooting they saw the male who officers shot with a handgun,” police said. “A toy gun was found at the scene and recovered by detectives.”
The name of the fatally wounded man was withheld pending notification of his relatives.
