A man wanted for a non-injury crime involving an assault weapon was taken into custody Wednesday after leading police on a chase in a pickup truck from South Gate to Monterey Park, authorities said.
The man surrendered about 8:45 a.m. after pulling into a business parking lot near the eastbound Pomona (60) Freeway in Monterey Park.
The chase began about 8 a.m. when South Gate officers saw the red pickup truck and tried to make a traffic stop, but the driver kept going.
South Gate police Capt. Darren Arakawa said the man was wanted for a May 29 incident involving an assault weapon, in which no one was injured.
The chase led into Long Beach and then into Montebello and Monterey Park. At times, the suspect drove on the wrong side of the street, but he generally slowed at intersections and avoided oncoming traffic.
After he surrendered, police searched the pickup and recovered an assault weapon, Arakawa said.
The man’s name was not immediately released.
