A man behind the wheel of a van was shot and killed early Friday in an apparent gang-related shooting and crash in the Panorama City area that also left two passengers critically injured.

The van crashed about 2 a.m. in the 14700 block of West Plummer Street, Los Angeles Police Department Officer Aareon Jefferson said. The vehicle had been struck by at least seven bullets, according to police, who are unsure if the shots were fired from another vehicle or by someone standing near the van as it passed by.

The driver died at the crash scene, Jefferson said. He was not immediately identified.

Police told reporters at the scene that a front-seat passenger was shot and critically wounded and two other passengers — who were riding in the back of the van — were injured when the vehicle crashed. One of the rear passengers was also in critical condition and the other was treated at a hospital and released, police said.

Two of the four victims are gang members and all are residents of the San Fernando Valley, according to an LAPD statement.

Anyone with information on the case was urged to call (877) LAPD-247.
