A Newhall man was sentenced Tuesday to 28 years to life in prison for killing his new bride and assaulting a man he accused of flirting with her.

Robert Arvizu was convicted two weeks ago of first-degree murder for killing his 25-year-old spouse in 2015.

Jurors also found Arvizu, 50, guilty of two counts of assault likely to produce great bodily injury stemming from the attack on a friend the night before his wife’s body was found.

Deputies asked to perform a welfare check at the couple’s Newhall apartment discovered Courtney Arvizu’s body before dawn on May 24, 2015. They arrested her husband less than two hours later.

The coroner determined that the victim died of smothering and also had multiple blunt force injuries.

The night before, Arvizu assaulted a friend who gave him a ride home from a party that the defendant attended with his wife.

The couple had been married for about two months.
