Orange County law enforcement authorities Wednesday were trying to figure out why an armed suicidal man who held sheriff’s deputies at bay for about five hours at a park in Trabuco Canyon ended up killing himself despite the efforts of crisis negotiators.

The tense marathon standoff began about 4 p.m. Tuesday in a dirt parking lot at Whiting Ranch Wilderness Park in the 27900 block of Glenn Ranch Road, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.

A crisis negotiation team was at the scene trying to get the 59-year-old man to leave his vehicle without the firearm.

But about 9:30 p.m. the sheriff’s department announced the man had shot himself.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

No additional details were yet available, including the man’s background and what may have led to the standoff and subsequent suicide.
